Temple of Flux (2010)

Temple of Flux by Flux Foundation was a 100-foot by 200-foot array of dune-like peaked structures, ranging from 12 to 35 feet in height. In 2010, this was a grant-supported art installation for the Burning Man event, central to the civic life of this temporary city. Built from layers of whitewashed thin plywood over a heavy lumber structure by a 100+-person volunteer crew, the Temple of Flux enclosed both intimate nooks and grand courtyards which were spiritual, secular gathering spaces for everyone. Made to accomodate all event participants’ memories and dedications, the structures were burned at the event’s end in a spectacular final ceremony. Concept and design by Rebecca Anders, Jessica Hobbs, and Peter Kimmelman, technical design by Ben Anderson and Peter Kimmelman, burn design by Don Cain. More about Flux Foundation.
