Zoa (2012)

A sculptural transformation in three acts

Zoa (2012) by Flux Foundation was a multi-stage installation supported by and built for the 2012 Burning Man event, featuring four giant winged seeds (based on Callaeum Septentrionale) surrounding three graceful steel beasts. Within a 75-foot diameter site, each seed spanned 30 feet, and the tallest steel structure stood 25 feet high. In its first stage, the winged seeds clustered tightly around the Zoa creatures, lit at night with ghostly colors. Midway through the event, the wooden seeds were burned away and the Zoas exposed, to display stunning flame effects in dramatic nightly shows. Overall design by Rebecca Anders with contributions from Jessica Hobbs, lighting design by Brian Krawitz, flame effects designed by Margaret Long, burn designed by Don Cain and Kimric Smythe, carpentry directed by Steve Beresford-Howe and Carrie Barnes. The crew included electricians, lighting experts, wood and metal fabricators, flame effect specialists, and many other artists and makers. More about Flux Foundation.
